Sabbath School Study Week 2

Sabbath School Study Week 2

Introduction:  As we continue in the first chapter of Hebrews, the author is keeping the focus on  differentiating between the Son of God and the angels. This passage is quite straight forward yet important.  We are going to finish the first chapter because this passage all goes together.  It is important to remember that during this time, this people, were quite accustomed to seeing and hearing about angels.  The stories of angels had been passed down through generations, and many experienced angels first hand. Both seeing and hearing them.  So you could say they knew angels.  Therefore it stands to reason that when a being comes and does great works, and heals the sick, and even raised people from the dead, that this being could be logically put in the angel category.  That would be an explanation of who he was that they could embrace.

Hebrews 1:5- 14

The Son Superior to Angels

For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”[a]?
Or again,
“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”[b]?
And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
“Let all God’s angels worship him.”[c]
In speaking of the angels he says,
“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”[d]
But about the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing you with the oil of joy.”[e]
10 He also says,
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
    and your years will never end.”[f]
13 To which of the angels did God ever say,
“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet”[g]?
14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

1. Is it possible today that we try to reduce Jesus to an angel?

2. If yes, how?

3. What are some of the distinguishing differences between Jesus and angels?

4. How important are angels in your life?

5. Should they be?

6. Are angels still relevant today?

Jesus is not just an angel he is ______________________________________________________.

Verse 14 is a wonderful verse.  What does this verse say about Jesus?

This next week, find time each day to thank Jesus for the gift of salvation.  Do you thank him for that daily?  Or do we thank him for everything else first?  This week focus on the salvation, the gift of life that he has given you.

Write out your favorite text about his gift of salvation.  Read it every morning.  Memorize it.  Praise God for being the son of God and for his gift.

Also,  thank him for his angels that he has sent to minister to us.  Think back on your life or week and see if you can identify where angels have ministered to you.

Then praise God for his gift, of your angel.
