The Gospel of Mark - Son of God

Son of God

Question of the day: What is one thing that can instantly make your day better?

Good morning class.

This morning we are going to start a new study.  A new book.  The gospel of Mark.  This is the shortest of the Gospels.  I hope that this study will be a blessing to you.

I want to encourage you to spend time reading this book on your own.  Read some everyday and when you get to the end, start over!  We can never read too much about Jesus.

READ: Mark 1:1-8

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way”—
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”
And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with[e] water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.”
Let's stop here for a moment.  So Mark starts off with with really an introduction.  He for the only time in this book gives just his opinion or thoughts.  The rest of the book, he is simply writing the stories and letting the stories say everything.  But here as he starts this book he states that Jesus is the son of God and he quotes prophesy.

Is there anything interesting to you about how Mark starts this Gospel?

How important is the prophesy?

How important is prophesy for us?

What does prophesy do for us?

What do we learn about John the baptist?

What is John the baptist doing?

Is it important that Mark tells us how John the baptist was dressed? What does this tell us?

Let's continue reading... verses 9-11

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

What are some details you wish were included in this story?
What other details do we know about this story according to the other Gospels?

What do you find anything interesting about verse 11?
What are the three messages that God the father gives to Jesus?

  1. You are my Son
  2. Whom I love
  3. With you I am well pleased
As parents what are some things we can take away from these three statements?
"With you I am well pleased."
What was God the father pleased about?

What is so important about this part of the story?
Put these verses together and what is Mark letting us know?

What does verse 1 and verse 11 have in common.  So I think it is safe to say, that all these first verses were written to make one strong statement.

What is that statement?
That is also the point of the whole book.

What are some takeaways for us today?
